House Lemonade: A Simple, Tart & Refreshing Homemade Recipe

When it comes to recipes, lemonade hardly seems like something that needs a detailed recipe. After all, how complicated can lemon juice, sugar, and water be? But sometimes the simplest recipes depend on getting the proportions just right.

For a refreshing summer drink, homemade lemonade is hard to beat. Freshly squeezed lemons give it a bright, natural flavour, while the right balance of sugar and water keeps it refreshing without making it overly sweet or diluted.

This version is intentionally tart, fresh, and simple. There’s no need to prepare a separate simple syrup, and you can adjust the final strength according to your taste. I also like keeping the lemonade slightly concentrated because it leaves room for ice, extra water, or even a splash of sparkling water.

Why Fresh Lemon Juice Makes a Difference

The quality of your lemonade depends heavily on the lemons you use. Freshly squeezed lemon juice provides a much brighter flavour than bottled lemon juice.

Since lemonade has so few ingredients, every ingredient matters. If the lemon juice is too mild or the drink is overly diluted, there isn’t much you can do to bring that fresh lemon flavour back.

That’s why it’s better to start with a slightly tart lemonade. You can always add more cold water if needed, but you can’t easily make an already diluted lemonade taste stronger without adding more lemons.

House Lemonade

Servings: 4
Preparation Time: 2 hours 30 minutes
Recipe Type: Homemade Drink
Best For: Summer, parties, family gatherings and refreshing beverages

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (235 ml) fresh lemon juice, approximately 5–6 lemons
  • 1/3 cup (65 grams) granulated sugar
  • 2 cups (475 ml) cold water
  • Up to 1 additional cup of cold water, as needed
  • Ice, for serving
  • Seltzer or sparkling water, optional

How to Make Homemade Lemonade

1. Prepare the Lemon Juice

Freshly squeeze enough lemons to get approximately 1 cup of lemon juice. Pour the juice through a fine sieve to remove excess pulp and seeds.

2. Add the Sugar

Transfer the strained lemon juice to a large pitcher. Add the granulated sugar and stir well until the sugar has completely dissolved.

3. Add Cold Water

Pour in 2 cups of cold water and mix everything together. This creates a concentrated lemonade base that can be stored in the refrigerator for several days.

For the freshest flavour, however, it’s best enjoyed within the first couple of days.

4. Adjust Before Serving

When you’re ready to serve, add ice and gradually mix in 1/2 to 1 cup of additional cold water, depending on how strong or tart you like your lemonade.

Start with less water and add more as needed.

How to Make Fizzy Lemonade

If you enjoy sparkling drinks, turn your homemade lemonade into a refreshing fizzy beverage.

Fill a glass with ice and pour in the lemonade until it reaches around two-thirds to three-quarters of the glass. Top it off with chilled seltzer or sparkling water.

Give it a gentle stir and serve immediately.

Easy Lemonade Flavour Variations

The basic recipe is simple, but you can easily customize it with fresh fruits and other ingredients.

Watermelon Lemonade

Replace one cup of the cold water with fresh watermelon juice. This adds natural sweetness and a refreshing summer flavour.

Raspberry or Blackberry Lemonade

Add around 1/2 cup of strained raspberry or blackberry purée to the lemonade base. The berries add colour, fruitiness, and a pleasant balance of sweet and tart flavours.

Maple Mint Lemonade

For something a little different, replace the granulated sugar with maple syrup. Add a few fresh mint leaves and shake or stir well.

For an adult version, you can also add bourbon to create a refreshing summer cocktail.

Tips for Making the Best Lemonade

  • Always use fresh lemons for the brightest flavour.
  • Start with less water and dilute gradually.
  • Don’t make the lemonade excessively sweet—the tartness is part of its appeal.
  • Strain the lemon juice if you prefer a smooth drink without pulp.
  • Keep the lemonade chilled until serving.
  • Add sparkling water just before drinking to retain the fizz.
  • Taste the lemonade after adding ice because the melting ice will naturally dilute it.

A Perfect Homemade Summer Drink

Sometimes the best summer recipes are the simplest ones. Fresh lemons, sugar, and cold water are all you need to create a refreshing homemade lemonade.

Keep the base slightly concentrated, adjust the water according to your preference, and experiment with fruits, herbs, or sparkling water to create your own version.

Serve it over plenty of ice on a warm afternoon, and you have a simple drink that tastes like summer in a glass.
